Columnist: New budget strengthens college access

At a time when many states are investing less in higher education, Ohio is investing more — and with good reason. Education lays the foundation for a skilled workforce, which in turn drives our economy and contributes to more opportunities for Ohioans. That’s why Governor Kasich’s new two-year budget continues a strong focus on higher education, with the goal of increasing the number of Ohioans with a post-high school credential or degree. To work best, public education must be accessible and affordable for all of our citizens. Over the past six years, state and college leaders have made it a priority to strengthen pathways to a low-cost degree. At the same time, Ohio has been one of the very best states in holding down the growth of tuition and has been determined to tackle the root cause of higher tuition — university costs — by getting business leaders involved in helping our colleges and universities drive down their costs and pass savings along to students and their families.
